SPIN Daybreaker: Peach Fuzz

Another whirlwind of a week is coming to a close and there’s lots to reflect on and hopefully learn from. Just like life, any themes explored through music can all be classified as moments to find something new and exciting about ourselves. This week, the roundup is the epitome of discovering music to discover yourself. It is an amalgamation of all the best emotions we encounter in this lifetime: angst, self-absorption, selflessness, curiosity, love, confusion, confidence, you get it. These artists are setting the new standards of music – that is, blurring the lines, doing what they want, and focusing their attention to expressing themselves wholeheartedly instead of trying to create more boundaries for creativity to adhere to. They’re truly making the industry embrace what it is to be brilliantly abstract and freeform.

This roundup brings a balance of indie alt-rock, psych-pop, alt-R&B, and hip-hop. Highlights this week include the new Aussie kids on the psychedelic block, The Lazy Eyes, who deliver some creamy and fuzzy mental distortion on “The Island,” Moody UK grunge-pop band on the rise, L’objectif who satisfy the alt-rock craving with the melodically conversational “Burn Me Out,” and London’s grungy R&B powerhouse Aziya, who effortlessly creates an edgy feminine landscape in “Heaven For Me.”

SPIN Daybreaker: Summer Soundtrack

Ahead of this holiday weekend, we welcome you back with open arms as we get ready to light up the night with pretty patriotic explosions. Aside from including a stellar group of artists who are on the brink, this week’s roundup captures the lively spirit of the summer heat. With colorful sound textures, soulful sonic grooves, and experiential instrumentation/production, these artists master the art of what it is to be freeform and true to their versatile identity. Genreless has become the new genre and this collection of musical wizards are here to consciously (or unconsciously) dominate the realm.

This week’s highlights include Minneapolis based rhythmic songwriter, Miloe who brings out his signature sound in “Solo,” dreamy producer/multi-instrumentalist Olan, who hypnotizes and gets vulnerable in chill-tempo track, “Push,” and multi-talented artist Dave B., who alternatively bursts out of his shell lyrically and musically in “All Falls Down.”

SPIN Daybreaker: Down the Yellow Brick Road

It hasn’t been long since we’ve last seen you (this week has flown by), but alas, welcome back to another week and another week of music discovery. We’ve got lots of exciting new music coming through this week that’s all about presence, spatial resonance, and musical liberation. The artists showcased in this week’s Daybreaker playlist are the embodiment of being just that – an artist. They have multi-layered, melodically evolving tracks that contain much depth to get lost in. Musically engaging, they are well-rounded artists who can carefully construct their bodies of work to showcase each detail of the talent they possess—from songwriting to producing and everything in between.

Standouts for this week’s alt R&B/Latin, neo-soul, jazz, and indie electronic mix include Teo?, who just released a full-length album, Sol, and showcases his smooth vocals and Latin/neo-soul fusion on “Pantera.” Next is Charlotte Day Wilson who captivates with her echoey vocals in the dynamically paced “Keep Moving.” And lastly, one of our favorite standouts are jazzy psychedelic trio Shadeemus, who take you on a vibrant guitar-infused journey through “Atlantis.”

SPIN Daybreaker: Violet Lounge

Here we meet again at our not-so-secret weekly rendezvous, and boy are we back with loads of new music for you to discover and rummage through. This week’s playlist is bringing some rhythmic lounge vibes that’ll pair with your mood perfectly when you’re working, studying, cooking dinner with bae, or kicking back with some friends in an intimate setting. It is a concentrated collection of the best rising R&B, soul-tronic, neo-soul, and alt-pop artists that have saucy musicality, emotive lyricism, and sonic storytelling on lock.

Highlights this week include South Londoner Sasha Keable, that is no newcomer to creating some of the most relatable and soulful acoustic love songs – which her latest single “Exception,” is a true testament of her pure songwriting capabilities. The next artist in this week’s limelight is the artist that cannot be pinned down, Genesis Owusu, who keeps shape-shifting and completely decimating any genre boundaries in the funk-filled “Same Thing.” Owusu is also on our list of the 30 best albums of 2021 (so far) so he’s one you should definitely have on your radar. The last spotlight this week belongs to Venezuelan band Rawayana, who creates a refreshing blend of soul, jazz, and down-tempo salsa, in the hypnotic “Discúlpeme Usted,” that’ll have you dancing from side to side for the entire 8:28 minutes of its transportive musical journey.

SPIN Daybreaker: The Ultimate Indie Soundtrack

If you didn’t already know because of some blip in the time vortex, the end of the week has arrived and that can only mean one thing – the Daybreakers have emerged from the musical caverns to uplift your spirits and satisfy your indie-craving tastes. This week’s list is a feel-good, coastal indie mega mix inspired by the Golden State. Don’t be surprised if you also get transported back to the sweet memories of 2010, shamelessly entering the Hollisters and Abercrombies of the world. The rising artists showcased in this collection have quickly captured our attention with their abilities to create such warm, melodic, instrumentally explorative soundscapes. They all create and perform with great panache, undeniably received by the listener.

Standouts this week include Argentinian producer/multi-instrumentalist Tati Falco who masters melodic groove in “Haydee,” New York City-based duo Bubble Tea and Cigarettes that paint a vivid soundscape in the hushed, western-inspired and cinematic, “Santa Monica,” and a collab by multi-instrumentalist/producer Ex Olympic and enigmatic artist Paulo Guolo on the genre-defying ballad “Live With Maybe,” that’ll give your four minutes of heavenly sounds.

SPIN Daybreaker: 23 Songs You Shouldn’t Wait Any Longer to Discover

In the words of the infamous Rebecca Black, “It’s Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday.” Indeed Rebecca, everyone is looking forward to the weekend. We’ve survived yet another week and SPIN is here to deliver one hell of a mix to wash away the sins from what went down. We’ve updated our playlist with an array of genres that span across indie-pop, electronic/soul-tronic, neo-soul, R&B, and a sprinkle of acoustic, Latin and psych-rock. One thing’s for sure: you won’t get bored listening to this eclectic curation. In fact, this is guaranteed to keep up with your insatiably explorative musical taste. No cap.

This week brings some of the brightest artists that you’ll want to keep on your radar. Highlights include songwriter/producer Derek Simpson in the fluttery and soul-charged, “XING,” psych-pop instrumentalist White Cliffs that shines on the nostalgic sounding “Easy Go,” and If you’re looking for more of a lounge-type jazz escape, you’ll love genre-defying group Hiatus Kaiyote in the sultry track, “Red Room.”

SPIN Daybreaker: 24 Songs That Are Larger Than Life

We’re finally in April and it’s only fitting we bring forth a mega-mix to set the momentum for the 28 days ahead. Daybreaker has arrived with the brightest curation yet, sure to fill the room with all the best moods. This week is a collection of happy, love-drunk, edgy, soul-infused indie and alternative songs. Don’t worry though, there’s still a little splash of jazz in there.

Unsurprisingly, we have another batch of outstanding artists who display a sense of leadership in their songwriting – using their wits in a vulnerable way that’s hard not to be enchanted by. They’re rebellious in song structure, not afraid to be experimental, which makes them easily distinguishable in a sea of artists. This week’s standouts include a collab by two free-form indie groups, Chartreuse and ALASKALASKA, who get introspectively groovy on “Keep Checking Up On Me.” Next is indie-alternative artist, Conchúr White who shows off his bass lines and storytelling in the booming “Vocation Vacation,” and lastly is duo Lewis Del Mar who showcase their gritty edge and Latin grooves in the percussive filled “Stealing (Nightly)”

SPIN Daybreaker: 17 Songs That Will Boost Your Mood

It’s the first lovely Friday of spring and what better way to celebrate the coming of better weather and fun times than driving down the coast or starting an isolated dance party on the beach? Lucky for you, Daybreaker has curated some of the grooviest songs you can crank the stereo up to whilst on your weekend escapade. This week’s playlist brings some infectious bops rotating through the pop, dance, soul, psych-pop, and R&B spaces. It’s a complete mix that’ll satisfy every musical craving.

Per usual, standouts this week include three incredible rising artists that are making a lasting impression within the industry. First up is seven-piece band, VC Pines who bring a lively alternative-soul sound accompanied with Jack Mercer’s deeply lush vocals on “Smoke Without Fire.” Next is gritty but delicate songstress Donna Missal who released an intimately empowering self-love anthem, “sex is good (but have you tried).” Lastly there’s the Gold Coast psych-pop band, Babe Rainbow who melt away your sorrows with the ethereal dreamy lullaby, “Your Imagination” that features some spoken words and vocals from multi-faceted artist/activist Jaden Smith.
